I’ll keep jumping in once in awhile and try some more, but…. I suppose you know where I’m going with all of this, eh? I can’t make my Excel act flaky on highlighting and I tried twice last night and once when I got up this morning, trying to let some time pass between and after running Paint Shop Pro, Hot Dog HTML editor, Mozilla, etc. I wonder what YOUR system would do if you un-install any Logitech software and did a reboot? Would yours (like mine) recognize the mouse and KB as plain ol’ devices and operatre OK? At least long enough for you to see if the flaky Excel problem happens again. Mine is connected to the PS2 port, not USB. When I installed XP Pro eight months ago, I never bothered installing ANY Logitech software and the two devices work just fine, except the extended buttons on the KB are inoperative. I also have a Logitech cordless mouse and keyboard combo but NOT of the optical variety. As WllyWlly and I were talking about in a thread about optical mice, Logitech’s drivers over time have occasionally been hard to deal with. So if I read those 2 sentences correctly, you have THREE USB connections, right? (mouse/KB, QuickCam, and Sony whatever) You’re using a USB hub, huh? I think Joe is right – it’s gotta be a driver acting flaky and if it were me, I’d suspect Logitech for the candidate. Don’t think that would be the difference. I also have Office 2000 but without any SRs applied. You can also turn it off by putting “services.msc” in the command line if there is a category that corresponds to the service taking up a lot of clock time that you don’t need. If it’s going up significantly, then you can search out the culprit and possibly end it. The next time you get ready to do this Excel task, minimize CPU time where it will be viewable in your system tray or now it has been named by the XP people notification area or just click on the CPU graph and you can resize it in a corner of your desktop and watch what it’s doing. With the exception of “winlogon” which can keep you from booting, and “iexplorer” if you are running IE or whatever browser name you are running,, a number of those processes start up with XP Home or Pro that you don’t need running at all (from 31 to 41), no matter how well you have tweaked msconfig–and they can be ended or prioritized from 1-31 at least. Hlewton–If it turns out getting a significant CPU spike when this phenom occurs, check out Black Viper’s Windows Service Configurations for a helpful guide to tweaking some of these processes you don’t need off by ending task.
